Welcome to the Ground Cover Public Art Project - a happening that employed nearly 600 volunteers to make 300 blankets that were ultimately given to individuals experiencing homelessness. The "blanketeers" (as they became affectionately called), worked throughout most of 2013 towards the final installation in December of 2013. Knitted, crocheted, woven or quilted; when put together, these individual blankets created a 117 ft. X 50 ft. “ground cover” that made a colossal image of lush desert blooms. Each blanket was comprised of twenty-eight, 10 in. X 10 in. squares. Each square became a “pixel” in the overall image. The giant blanket was installed in a vacant lot in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. After installation, the blankets were given to a variety of agencies serving the homeless, who in turn gave them to individuals in need of cover.
